Building a digitalization infrastructure for the process industry
Digitalization presents huge challenges to a company’s IT infrastructure. In the process industry, IT infrastructures often still use the traditional approach of individually managed IT applications running on virtualized server clusters which are managed by the IT department, while OT applications run on separated servers or industrial PCs closer to production at the shopfloor. This approach is sufficient for today’s business but falls short when it comes to extracting value from the data available in the company.
A combination of cloud and edge computing technologies, in particular the “Infrastructure as Code (IaC)” approach wherein infrastructure is built and managed as software, can help to address digitalization challenges. IaC creates a digital infrastructure that is separated in an information technology (IT) and in an operation technology (OT) realm. In our use case, the IT part is implemented using cloud technologies (Kubernetes) and the OT part relies on edge computing (Nerve).
This combination enables the company to make full use of data connectivity and pre-processing of data and the central management of OT software, as well as allowing them to migrate legacy applications and use new smart applications.
