Cybersecurity affects all industrial companies, and the EU is also pushing for directives and regulation on the subject. TTTech Industrial already began addressing cybersecurity a few years ago, as the protection of sensitive data, the reduction of production downtimes and, above all, the safeguarding of networked production systems are essential prerequisites for digitalization in production. At this year’s SPS show in Nuremberg, Germany, TTTech Industrial will focus on secure IIoT solutions on its booth #230 in hall 5.
Cybersecurity at TTTech Industrial
Last year, TTTech Industrial became one of the first Austrian companies to be certified by TÜV Austria according to the industrial cybersecurity standard IEC 62443-4-1. This subnorm provides the basis for secure product development and lifecycles. The certification of its IIoT platform Nerve according to IEC 62443-4-2, which covers IT security for industrial automation systems on product level, is ongoing and expected to be finished by the end of the year.
“We’re progressing well with product-level IEC 62443 certification. We are working closely with TÜV to meet all requirements. Machine manufacturers that choose an IIoT platform certified according to IEC 62443-4-2 that provides the aforementioned mechanisms have access to a strong security "toolbox". They can quickly make their existing software modules secure in accordance with IEC 62443 and ultimately design their digital product portfolio in compliance with the CRA,” says Herbert Hufnagl, member of the executive board at TTTech Industrial.
Nerve is a modular edge computing platform for machine builders that provides a secure foundation for digitalization projects and IIoT applications. With Nerve, customers can host applications and software as Docker containers or virtual machines, as well as collect, visualize and pre-process data in real time before sending it to their Cloud. Management and deployment of updates is carried out via the central management system. Nerve is developed based on the principles of IEC 62443 and already integrates all important cybersecurity features: All connections to the Nerve Management System are secured and role-based access control with MFA and central update mechanisms for applications and firmware are available. (Legacy) applications can be isolated from other applications and managed as virtual machines (VMs) or Docker containers. GDPR-compliant hosting is provided on Microsoft Azure in Germany.
At SPS, TTTech Industrial will once again show a demo of Nerve, where visitors can familiarize themselves with the platform's features and functions and look at a practical example of a third-party application in action.
New IPC generation for Nerve
Nerve is platform-agnostic and can be run on any Intel-powered industrial PC (IPC). TTTech Industrial provides consulting and integration advice for hardware from different vendors, but it also offers customers a one-stop-shop solution with TTTech Industrial’s new IPC, MFN 200.
MFN 200 is a compact and functional standard IPC. It is equipped with an Intel Atom Elkhart Lake CPU and has six Gigabit Ethernet ports, three USB ports, and a display port, which means that in most cases no additional Ethernet switches are needed. Passive fanless cooling offers quiet operation and ensures that the IPC is ready for use in temperatures from -20°C up to 60°C. The MFN 200 has a TPM 2.0 chip that provides a secure system base for software applications and Nerve and is designed for panel mounting on DIN rails.
Partner showcase at SPS
According to Herbert Hufnagl, it is important to have reliable partners for digitalization projects that help customers to build solutions that fit individual requirements: “One of the strengths of Nerve is that it can combine software and applications from different vendors. That is why we are continuously expanding our partner ecosystem to be able to offer customers more choice and flexibility for their business needs.”
At SPS, TTTech Industrial will introduce two new partners in its ecosystem, MVTec and 40Factory, and show how third-party applications from these suppliers can be securely integrated in Nerve:
- MERLIC from MVTec is a software for the efficient creation of image processing applications. MERLIC, as a manageable application on edge, can be seen live as part of the Nerve demo at TTTech Industrial’s booth.
- MAT from 40Factory as supported application for Nerve: Asset management of machines and industrial equipment with powerful visualization and machine data analysis.
